The students followed the excavation techniques and data analyses program which ran in parallel with the conservation and cultural heritage management program. 25 students from different universities such as Tirana, Gjirokastra, Elbasani, Skopje, Pristine, Thessalonica, Milan, Oxford, Kalamazoo, Chicago, Bari, American University of Rome, Athens and Vienna participated in the only international archaeological summer school inAlbania. One of the papers tittled: “Ongoing development of the National Sites and Monuments recording system in Albania” was presented in the session on Databases and Information Management. This book, written by Ardit Miti and Eglantina Serjani, was very well received by the audience, specialists in archaeology, history and cultural heritage, and also by the wider public and media representatives. There was a lot of media coverage in the written press (Koha ditore, Lajmi, Express newspapers), as well as in Kosovo Tv channels. The ‘Town of a Thousand Windows’ has one of the largest and best preserved historical centres in Albania, and was recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of the cultural and historical values of both, the multiphase walled settlement situated on the hilltop, overlooking the Osum River and the impressively articulated Ottoman architecture of the houses within and without the castle walls.

Ismail Qemali 12/1 Tirana, Albania Tel: +355 4250465/244870 www. albanianheritage. net 1 Newsletter October 2009 www. albanianheritage. net ASSESSMENT OF CULTURAL HERITAGE IN THE BJESHKËT E NAMUNA AREA From 17-th to 26-th October, a team from Albanian Heritage Foundation composed by Ilir Parangoni, Sinoida Martallozi, Elis Grizhja and Ylli Prebibaj, undertook a survey to identify and catalogue tangible and intangible elements of cultural heritage in the mountainous area of Prokletije / Bjeshkët e Namuna (territory of Albania). The task was the collection of information regarding the development opportunities arising from both cultural and natural heritage, in this area. The main areas where the survey took place are: Shkodra Region • Shkodër: Ethnographic museum; • Kelmend: Village of Brojë, Tamara, Vukli, Nikç, Selcë, Lepushë; • Shkrel: Village of Shkrel, Zagora, Xhaja, Duçaj, Razëm, Boga; • Shala Valley: Theth village. Ismail Qemali 12/1 Tiranë (Albania) Tel: +355 4250465/244870 www. icaa. org. al Archaeology in the 21st Century: ICAA 19992007 is the latest publication by the ICAA. It details the achievements of the Centre since its foundation in 1999 and gives an overview of the extensive project work the Packard Humanities Institute funded ICAA has undertaken in that period. The review is forward looking and it is hoped that the ICAA will strengthen its role as a key institution in Albania. An ICAA meeting took place in the ICAA premises on February 14th 2008. The debate and discussion led to several decisions on which the ICAA staff is following up. One of the most important decisions was the creation of the ICAA as a registered NGO in the Albanian court, which will among other things enable the organization to apply for alternative funding. This map is created based on the Google map API which is offered free by Google and contains street, satellite and terrain details. The connection of the map with the sites database is realised through the definition of the geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude) in two fields of the sites data entry table. Ardit Miti and Egla Serjani are continuing to work with the archaeological dictionary of terms. 2. Ardit Miti, Egla Serjani and Sokol Bezhani are setting up the system for the creation of the GIS map. 3. ThroughanagreementbetweenFoAPandtheDepartment of History in the University of Tirana, Faculty of Philology, three students Evjeni Thomagjini, Besa Sinani and Ulsi Tota, carried out the educational practicum in the ICAA, working with the FoAP team. At the end they were granted a certificate of attestation. 4.
