SHORT-SEASON, HIGH-ALTITUDE GARDENING BULLETIN 862 Landscaping with native plants INTRODUCTION There are many reasons to consider a native plant landscape in Idaho’s shortseason, high-altitude regions, including water savings, decreased maintenance, healthy and adapted plants, and a desire to create a local theme around your home. Most plants sold for landscaping are native to the eastern United States and the moist climates of Europe. They require acid soils, constant moisture, and humid air to survive and remain attractive. Most also require a longer growing season than we have available in the harshest climates of Idaho. Choosing to landscape with these unadapted plants means accepting the work and problems of constantly recreating a suitable artificial environment. Native plants will help create a landscape that is more “comfortable” in the climates and soils that surround us, and will reduce the resources necessary to maintain the landscape. 1 Rain Garden Service Learning Project + Vignette Source: DTE Freshwater Institute – Western Michigan University General Information: Grade Level(s): 7-12 Department(s): Science/environmental studies Background Information: A simple concept for managing what happens to rainwater in urban and suburban landscapes, called a rain garden, is gaining in popularity across the country. Rain gardens pose an incredible opportunity to educate people about the issue of storm water while allowing people to take effective action to decrease their contribution to the problem. A rain garden is a garden which takes advantage of rainfall and stormwater runoff in its design and plant selection. Usually, it is a small garden which is designed to withstand the extremes of moisture and concentrations of nutrients, particularly Nitrogen and Phosphorus, which are found in stormwater runoff. Rain gardens are sited ideally close to the source of the runoff and serve to slow the stormwater as it travels down

Firth Maya McBride reading to her son Kieran Photo Andy Scheck In 2003, Maya McBride and her husband made the move east out of Berkeley to Orinda and bought what she describes as the quintessential rancher replete with a backyard shaded by tall cedar and redwood trees and covered with ivy and Bermuda grass. "It was so dark and creepy," says Maya, admitting that she has an aversion to spiders and ticks. She began to brainstorm ways to introduce light and new plant life to create a friendly backyard haven for her growing family, which now includes three boys ages 10, 7, and 4 years along with an old cat named Rosie. Maya quickly encountered a stumbling block to her landscape remodeling plans. When it rained water pooled in a large dirt area in the yard. Showcase Conservation Iowa School for the Deaf Ready for Rain Iowa School for the Deaf (ISD) in Council Bluffs is taking a proactive approach to managing storm water on their campus, and teachers are educating their students about the water quality benefits of the infiltration-based management practices the school is adopting. In the early 1990s, ISD constructed an outdoor education environment with a 20-acre nature center on the north side of campus, along U. S. Highway 92. The nature center includes a wetland site, tall grass prairie, a wildflower plot, a one-mile walking trail and a 50-foot tall windmill. As the years passed, one thing was missing from the nature center – water. “From a general appearance, it wasn’t what we wanted,” said Rich Connell, facilities director for ISD. Dale DuVal, district conservationist with the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Council Bluffs, says the lack of water in the wetland was due to the area’s soil type and lack of
