Our Most Important Task? How Economics and Ecology Are Intertwined By Michael Schut We all have our passions. Thank God for that. The embers of social change smolder, kindled by such passion. Periodically the embers explode, spreading like wildfire, fueled by that same passion. What is our passion, our most important task? How would you answer that question? Bringing economics home I would say that task is to once again nestle our economic system within Earth’s cycles, Earth’s economy, recognizing that everything we have, everything that feeds our economy, comes from God s creation. In a way "nestle" is too gentle a word -- wrestle comes to mind. Now, at the first mention of "economy" or "economics," some of us freeze as if caught in the headlights of an oncoming truck. Economics, at its most basic, simply concerns itself with who gets what and how we manage and share the gifts of Earth. As it is, our economy sees itself as separate from, rather than fully dependent upon, Earth

How to Protect our Rivers and Streams Suggestions for Churches and Homeowners Avoid using chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Preserve established trees and shrubs - they soak up rainwater. Plant trees and shrubs that filter pollutants and reduce runoff. Use non-toxic alternatives to home cleaning chemicals. Don¹t cut your grass too short. Recycle used motor oil. Do not dump paints or solvents - take them to a hazardous waste facility. Sweep driveways and patios instead of hosing them off. Learn about eco-roofs and bioswales. Plant native plants that require little fertilizer or extra water. Use an electric or push mower on your lawn. Use compost and mulch in your garden to preserve moisture. Use non-phosphate soap to wash your car. Don¹t dump trash or spill fuel from your boat. Kill English ivy. Help on a streambank restoration project.

RESOLUTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION Arizona Regional Assembly October 22 & 23, 2010 Background: This resolution is based on the Sense-of-The-Assembly Statement on Global Climate Change (No. 0921) which was adopted by the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada, meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana July 29, 2009-August 2, 2009. The Statement was informed by the set of principles developed by the National Council of Churches in 2008 which outline those elements we need to address if we are to mitigate the worst-case scenarios of global climate change. Beginning in early February 2007 and nearly monthly since, the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, representing 95% consensus among 2,500 scientists, has issued sobering reports, with recommendations that the burning of fossil fuels and other human activities are driving climate change. With the near unanimity among scientists about the causes of worldwide climate change, it

Congregations earning 25 points in each of the four categories will be certified as Earth Care Congregations and receive various honors. Congregation members will also be invited to participate as individuals by completing similar actions in their homes. A Guide to Greening Presbyterian Churches provides congregations with worksheets, resources, and instructions for becoming an Earth Care Congregation. WATER and SPIRIT A BIBLIOGRAPHY Aguilar, George W. , Sr. When the River Ran Wild! Indian Traditions on the MidColumbia and the Warm Springs Reservation. 2005, Oregon Historical Society Press. A personal memoir and tribal history of the Eastern Chinookans, who lived and worked for centuries connected to the rhythms and resources of the great fishing grounds of the Columbia River. Aguilar helps us know what the River People have lost over the decades, but he also gives testimony to what has been conserved and enlivened by a people who love the land and who honor tradition and those who came before. Duncan, David J. My Story as Told by Water: confessions, Druidic rants, reflections, bird-watchings, fish-stalkings, visions, songs and prayers refracting light, from living rivers, in the age of the industrial dark. 2001, Sierra Club Books. Duncan braids his contemplative, activist and rhapsodic voices together into an irresistibly distinctive whole, speaking with a power and urgency
