The Heart of The Arc A Newsletter Celebrating The Arc’s Employees May—June 2011 Shereen MacDonald Carrying Forth the Spirit of The Arc Although the spotlight may not be her favorite thing, Shereen MacDonald is starting to get used to it. Shereen has been a supportive living coordinator at The Arc of Atlantic County for 10 years. For the past six years, she has also served as advisor to The Arc’s Self Advocacy Club, helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities stand up for themselves, find their voices and realize their potential. Her passion for her work – especially with the Self Advocates – did not go unnoticed by The Arc’s executive staff. That’s why when AtlantiCare’s Spirit of Women nominations were being solicited, The Arc’s chief officers jumped at the chance to celebrate Shereen’s hard work and nominate her for the Community Hero in Action award. On April 14, Shereen was celebrated for her efforts at the AtlantiCare’s Spirit of Women Awards dinner at the

Welcoming New Staff and Residents of the Galloway Property Finally, after several long years of planning and construction, The Arc’s two four-unit homes will officially open in January 2011. Six residents have been selected to live in the new homes, and nearly all 20 staff have been hired. It’s been an exciting and fascinating journey for both the new residents and the staff as they get to know one another. Pat Jones says, “This is a big change for the ladies who will be moving to this home. They’ve spent years in a developmental center, which is a completely different setting than an Arc home. Some of the new staff are currently shadowing the direct support staff at the developmental center to get acquainted with the residents and see how their lives are presently so they have a better understanding when they move to the new homes. They’re learning how each c

The Heart of The ArcA Newsletter Celebrating The Arc’s Employees October—November All Staff Day Unites Colleagues for Day of Inspiration Renowned disabilities specialist, blogger and author David Hingsburger drew a crowd of nearly 160 Arc employees at the annual All Staff Day event held October 12th at Trump Marina. Dave’s experience both professionally as a disabilities specialist and personally as someone with a disability himself guided his stories throughout the day. His candid and forthright approach helped hammer home some key concepts about our work on behalf of people with developmental disabilities. Here are some memorable stories and messages from Dave’s talk that we hope you will retain and share with those who could not attend: Direct Support Professionals: Making ‘Home’ and ‘Community’ Happen One of Dave’s first experiences as a direct support professional was when he had to play Santa Claus at an institution for those residents who didn’t have family or friends to visi
