Libraries of the Future Libraries are at a turning point. As technology rapidly transforms the way we access information, and resources are increasingly available online and in digital formats, the established role of the library as a physical space housing racks of books is looking increasingly out of step with the needs of students and researchers. Allied with technology, library users’ needs and preferences are helping to drive the change in libraries. Students, researchers and teachers now expect to be able to access information around the clock, from almost anywhere in the world and via a growing number of devices, from laptops to phones. What does this mean for the academic library as we know it? What will it look like in 10 years’ time? Will it exist in its current physical form? About the Report The following report highlights US economic trends (2009) and summarizes trends in public, school and academic libraries during the current decade for: Number of Libraries and Population Served, Expenditures, Staffing, and Services. The compilation was prepared in December 2009 for the staff and member leaders of the American Library Association to support its planning activities. Data are compiled from multiple sources: • Data about public, school and academic libraries are derived from national surveys administered by two federal agencies: the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) (http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/libraries/) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) (www.imls.gov hosted by http://harvester.census.gov/imls/index.asp). Academic and school library surveys are conducted by NCES. The academic library survey is biennial and respondents are from the “universe” of eligible institutions (all degree‐granting and receiving federal financia
