Cameron McCormick INSTRUCTION esterners know Tai Chi to be a slow form of exercise, but its Chinese origins relate to martial arts practice as a means to develop precise form to repel incoming attack. The forms practiced take the students through a complete, natural range of motion over their center of gravity. Accurate, repeated practice of the movement patterns are said to retrain posture, encourage circulation throughout the students’ bodies, maintain flexibility through their joints, and further familiarize students with the sequences and forms. Hmm…that sounds like it may be good training for golf! Indeed, it is for reasons linked to the way we learn. At high speed, movement response becomes reactive. In fact, it’s normal for golfers to make backswings that last one second with downswings to impact lasting merely two-tenths of a second. One’s ability to influence, modify and learn at such speeds is diminished based on reactive mechanisms being retrieved from autonomously lea

INSTRUCTION Cameron McCormick t’s a question no proud golfer wants to be asked. But when someone starts routinely missing short putts, it’s only a matter of time before the query is issued. The politically correct manner to ask might be, “Are you losing your nerves?” But there is no mistaking the real question. “Do you have the yips?” Ah, yes. The evil “y” word. Much like poisonous “s” word (shank), no one wants to hear the word “yips” uttered in their direction. But it happens. Maybe it’s happening to you. Do you feel an increase in tension before and/or during your putting stroke? Does this tension start in your hands and work its way up your arms, resulting in a jerky jab at the ball? One generally can think of the yips as a reaction to the anticipation of failure. Similar to when you’re the passenger in a car and you hit your imaginary brake before the driver does. We want to exert control over the outcome. Most of the time, at least in golf, the results of these anticip

INSTRUCTION Cameron McCormick o you tend to play better golf when paired with players who are better than you? Do you perform worse when playing with people who don’t take the game seriously? Have you ever found yourself in a situation in which you’re feeding off the energy of your playing partners, either positively or negatively? If so, you’re not alone. In fact, you’re part of the majority. Amateurs and professionals alike have produced anecdotal evidence that they experience fluctuations in performance due to the actions of those around them. The expression goes: You raise or lower yourself to the standards of those around you. In support of this expression, recent cognitive science research points to a unique learning system in our brains known as “mirror neurons. ” When young players pick up a club for the first time, they begin a long process of education that relies heavily on imitation. Watching other players swing and listening to their coach’s instruction builds the pat
