By staying well we cannot only make sure that we get to work every day, but also are more productive while we do our jobs. Here are some quick tips for maintaining a healthy work environment: •Wash your hands often. •Keep your workspace clean. Germs can live on contaminated surfaces, but cleaning your work station clear can also make your job easier! •Eat healthy, balanced meals. Breakfast is called the most important meal of the day for a reason. Even a little something in the mornings can give you the energy you need to make it through the day. •Avoid co-workers who are sick, and if you’re sick, stay home! •Drink plenty of water. ACTIVITY SPOTLIGHT: POETRY GROUP popular activity hosted by one of our Social Work Interns is the Poetry Group, run by Mindy Chettih, an intern from New York University. Meeting every Monday in the conference room, Mindy selects a few poems for participants to read and discuss. “Poetry Group gives people a chance to relate to each other in a different way,” Mindy explains. “It offers a chance for some mental exercise, using the poems to evoke the participants’ emotions and open up a forum to share their feelings. ” Mindy has found that this can be a great way to get people to open up to one another, because just the way that different people respond to the same poem opens up a wide range of discussions. “The participants learn from each other,” Mindy says, “and everyone always has an awful lot to say. ” The goal of poetry group, as with most activities at Adult Day Health Care, is to create a safe environment in which participants can be themselves. “The

Amy Post and Betty Whelan were busy making sure our residents got the most out of each and every icy cold day. Spring is here but we just want to take a moment to reflect on what got us through those bitter months. Residents kicked off the holiday season with an elegant party filled with music, hors d’oeuvres, a sumptuous dinner and dancing to the smooth sounds of Lee Perry Gross Entertainment. When we were not holiday shopping, our residents enjoyed concerts at: • The Albert Einstein Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stephen Moshman, the son of our very own resident Lorraine Rosenberg. •ARenaissance Holiday Concert, at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers. • The very talented women’s choral ensemble, “The Hudson Bells” treated us to a uplifting conc

NEW PAIN MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES FROM AN UNLIKELY SOURCE heAdult Day Health Care Program is proud to announce the beginning of a new pain management program that has already turned some skeptical participants into believers. Recently, with the help of Dr. Tatiana V. Gaidarenko, we began a massage and acupuncture program to provide a pain management alternative to traditional medications. While there’s always a bit of apprehension that comes with the unknown, several of our participants have seen immediate benefits. For years, ADHC participant Nicoletta Camerino has suffered from arthritis, dealing with bad pain in her knee, back and hip. Not knowing much about acupuncture before her first session, her pain was so bad that she decided to take a chance to see if it would help. “I got scared the first time I saw the needles,” Nicoletta remembers. “But now I’m used to it. It’s really very relaxing and I’m surprised a needle can make you feel that way. ” On

May and June were filled with lectures, theater and music. Educator, Shirley Romaine presented “All the World’s a Stage: Oscar Wilde” sparking thought provoking discussion. Our residents enjoyed a performance by musicians from the Conservatory of Westchester, illustrating the beauty of the Tango featuring music by Marco Valentino Quartero. The Klezmer sounds of Surli & Lisa from the group Party Til You Plotz was a fan favorite, one that made everyone’s heart sing. And of course, we got ready for the Fourth of July with rousing performance by Lu Gmoser and Company who presented an evening of George M Cohan’s Patriotic Songs. We could go on and on with memorable entertainment and that is just over a two month period

HHH Home Care News It’s Never Too Late for a Flu Vaccination While it is impossible to put an exact date on the start and end of flu season, we all know how important it is to begin distributing the vaccination before outbreaks begin. At HHH Home Care we have offered vaccinations to our staff since October, but it is still not too late for those yet to receive it. According to the US Center for Disease Control, in more than 80% of influenza seasons since 1976, peak influenza activity has not occurred until January or later. In more than 60% of seasons, the peak was in February or later. In general, health-care providers begin offering the vaccination soon after it becomes available and continue throughout the yearly flu season. HHH Home Care wants to ensure that any aides who want to protect themselves from getting the flu are vaccinated before influenza activity in the community begins. Even if the vaccine is not received until after the New Year, i

By eating right and getting plenty of sleep, you can make sure you have the energy you need to get through a stressful day. Also, find a hobby outside of work that you can turn to when your day has left you wiped out. Take breaks Sometimes, all you need is a minute alone to get control of your emotions and refocus. Plan to take short breaks a few times per day, not just when the stress levels build up. Several quick breaks keep you fresher than one long break in the middle of the day. Unfortunately, dealing with stress is a big part of our job and can make the difference between solving a customer’s problem and losing their business entirely. Always remember to keep a calm, professional attitude and to remind the customer that you are there to work for them. One of our biggest jobs at Customer Service is to help people through pro

PROGRAM EXPANSION INTO QUEENS COUNTY tarting in February, 2010, the Long Term Home Health Care Program expanded its operating territory and began enrolling patients in Queens County. Since 1986, our program has been providing high quality home health care to individuals all over the Bronx. Now offering the same, top-notch level of care to the residents of Queens, we renew our pledge to create a “nursing home without walls. ” “We are very pleased to have the chance bring the HHH quality of care across the bridge to Queens,” says Joann Monahan, Director of Patient Services for the LTHHCP. “Patients should take comfort in knowing that we will be bringing the same level of care that we are known for in the Bronx with us into these new areas. ” The move will provide eligible residents of Queens County with the wide range of services the LTHHCPcan offer. After an evaluation, our patients will be assigned a health care team, consisting of a home health aide, a nurse, and even a social wor

At its heart, leadership is about motivation, and the key to motivation is communication. People are much more willing to throw their best efforts behind a project when they know what it is for. Individuals tend to work better with a specific end goal in mind, so it is important for leaders to communicate what they are hoping to achieve. Furthermore, someone who is struggling to pull his or her weight is more apt to change his or her ways when expectations are clear. Above all, it is important for every member of a team to realize that leadership is not limited to authority figures. Leadership is something every individual can assume, even through efforts as simple as setting a good example. The old saying goes-- a team is only as strong as its weakest link. But, with a room full of
