Recreational vs.
Tournament Fishing
What are the differences?
If you re like me, when you decided to get into tournament bass fishing you were what you considered a pretty
hot stick when it comes to recreational bass fishing.
You ve caught some 5 lbers, 6 lbers, and maybe even a 7 lber.
However, I m speaking from experience when I tell you that recreational bass fishing and tournament bass
fishing are two completely different things altogether.
In recreational bass fishing the only pressure you have is
whatever you put on yourself.
In tournament bass fishing, you have time constraints, people already on your best
spots, spooky fish if they allow pre-fishing up until the tournament date, and a fairly specific weight class of fish
you need to catch in order to be competitive (ie - if it historically takes a 4 lb average weight to win on that lake).
Below I m going to give you some tips on everything from gear to tournament tactics.
Please read them, take
them to heart, and apply them before you compete in your first big tournament.
MENTAL GAME
Is this something you REALLY want?
Will you be able to take it emotionally when you bomb in your first event?
Are you able to open your mind and admit you re not quite the hot stick you thought you were, and then take the
necessary steps to correct that?
Can you handle pressure? Ask a good friend their opinion on this, since it s hard to be objective about ourselves
sometimes.
You always hear the pros on TV saying that competitive bass angling at their level is 90% mental.
The reason is
that they are all good flippers, they are all good drop-shotters, they are all good crankbaiters, but the thing that sets
the winner that day apart is making the right decisions at the right time.
GEAR
Get the highest graphite content rods you can afford and aluminum framed reels with as many bearing as you can
afford.
Get fishing rods of a higher power (ie - medium-heavy instead of medium action) than you use recreationally
because you re not taking your time fighting bass anymore.
Hook it, land it, move on.
Buy a quality fishing line and re-spool at least at the beginning of every year.
I usually re-spool my fishing line a
couple times per season on my most used rods.
Find a hook manufacturer that you like and stock up on your favourite hooks.
When choosing lure/bait manufacturers, remember that the bass can t read the label.
Get quality lures in the sizes
and colours that suit your area, but don t break the bank on the expensive stuff.
Don t bring the kitchen sink.
If your tackle bag is bigger than your average Japanese condo, it s time to downsize.
Drag around your monster bag long enough to take note of what you REALLY use and then leave the rest at
home.
Shop around.
Whenever possible deal with your local tackle shop.
Tell them your needs and see what they can do
to help you.
If they aren t interested, there are numerous options on the Internet.
If you own swivel snaps, throw them out.
I d usually recommend passing unwanted gear down to young anglers
just getting started, but why steer them in the wrong direction with swivel snaps.
PRE-EVENT PREP
