REF CRIES FOUL. WHO PAYS FOR RIOT DAMAGE? Who would want to be a referee? It really is the most thankless of tasks. Regardless of what sport it might be, all of us armchair critics are usuallyconvinced that we could do a better job than the man (or woman) in charge of a match and have few qualms about making our feelings in this regard (together with a few choice expletives!) known. Given time to reflect though, most sports fans would surely agree that it does take a special kind of person to do the job. A person who, despite knowing that their only likely reward will be criticism and abuse, will still decide to invest hours of their valuable time in pursuing a qualification that will enable them to contribute to a sport they feel a love or devotion toward. It’s true that we love to hate the ref but it’s equally true we appreciate that there can be no game without the person entrusted with the whistle.
