Based on the north-eastern side of Llanelli, Bryngwyn Comprehensive School has adopted
a ‘Triple A’ strategy in seeking success for its learners – attendance, attitude and achievement.
Headteacher Paul Jones recognises that tackling the first of these – attendance – is essential if
any progress is to be made on the others.
He explained:
It is our mantra that if you’re not there you can’t learn, but if you are attending
regularly you will have a more positive attitude and achieve more.
Backed by RAISE funding, the 900-learner school has introduced a host of initiatives in recent
years to reduce unauthorised absences and get disengaged youngsters focused on learning.
Using a two-fold strategy of making school more attractive for disaffected youngsters and
rigorously following up all absences with parents/carers, Bryngwyn has made steady inroads
into the problem.
