Project Report: GICD Donation Gardening
The recent Community Food Security Coalition Conference in Atlanta got me thinking
about food security in Dallas and North Texas.
The definition of community food
security is “a condition in which all persons have access to culturally acceptable,
nutritionally adequate food through local non-emergency sources at all times.
”
We gardeners are sharing people.
For those who love vegetable gardening, the sharing of
tomatoes and squash, plants and seeds, across backyard fences, with co-workers, at
church, and even with strangers, has a special place in our hearts, and is a nostalgic part
of gardening stories.
There is something triumphant about having too many banana
peppers, heirloom okra seeds, or fresh basil that drives you to seek out special persons
that will cherish these gifts.
