The proliferation of composite materials on the market has been confusing for the practicing
dentist.
However, in spite of the large number of dental composite products that have
appeared during the past 15 years, they all have simple, common characteristics.
They were
first put to widespread use by dentists in 1960 s but the composite materials in that era were
relatively of poor strength and wear properties.
As with other composite materials, a dental composite typically consists of a resin-based
matrix, such as a bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate BISGMA resin like urethane
dimethacrylate (UDMA), and inorganic filler such as silicon dioxide silica.
Compositions vary
widely, with proprietary mixes of resins forming the matrix, as well as engineered filler glasses
and glass-ceramic
