Researchers studying drug addiction have identified various motivations as to why people
develop such addiction.
A new animal model study from the School of Medicine, University of
Puerto Rico adds another possible motivation to this list.
According to the researchers involved in
the said study, stressful events such as social isolation early in life could also lead to drug
addiction.
The findings of this new study, which is entitled Social
Isolation During Perinatal Development Alters the
Behavioral Response to Cocaine in Juvenile Rats was
presented during the 122nd Annual Meeting of the American
Physiological Society in New Orleans this April.
Summary of the study
Previous studies have shown that stress can enhance both a
person’s drug seeking behavior and the effects of cocaine on the body.
Given this premise, the
researchers stressed several rats and observed how the stress would affect the effect their response
