Health Care is a Right, or is it? National or universal health care may be seen as an acceptable function of government, by those who believe this, because most believe everyone has a right to heath care. But do we? When we talk about rights, most of us would agree, we are talking about personal, individual or natural rights. Black’s Law Dictionary, 6th edition, gives the general definition of “rights” as “the right to powers of free action. ” It also describes personal rights as “the right to personal security, comprising those of life, limb, health, reputation, and the right of personal liberty. ” Notice the inclusion of “health” as a right. Also notice that “health care” is not listed. What is the difference between the two? Providing for one’s own health is a right to do what is best for one’s self, as in eating good food, exercising, seeking out the best in health care when needed. This is our right! As soon as we require the assistance of another human being, we no longer ha

Everywhere I turn, I see, read and hear how capitalism has destroyed the American economy. The political Left blames capitalism outright, while the political Right claims capitalism is the American ideal. The elitists in banking, government, academia and the media give lip-service to the idea of a free market, when they, in fact, have no use for it. The real purpose of claiming that free markets are the American ideal is to give the collectivist a scapegoat to blame for all their nefarious wealth redistribution programs. Too many of today's activists have fallen for this intentional misdirection. Blaming free market capitalism for our economic problems is accusing a ghost. It has been dead for a long time. It was first stabbed in the back in 1913 when the U.S. Congress passed the Federal Reserve Act and the United States Revenue Act (creating the IRS).

Our ancestors of just a hundred years ago may not have known much about “that new fangled telephony or that darn horseless carriage”. However, most of them did know when they were getting screwed on the exchange of their labor for “junk money”. “Don’t take any wooden nickels“, comes to mind. They wanted something of comparable value for their work. Back then, “Paper money” would not be accepted as a “medium of exchange” unless it was backed by something of proven value such as gold or silver. Most were also smart enough to know “you don’t get something for nothing”. My how things have changed! So, why do we accept paper money as a valuable “medium of exchange”? First, what is a medium of exchange? When individual producers exchange their products for other products, we have a direct exchange of goods; “bartering”. As the division of labor became more diversified, bartering became very cumbersome; enter a “medium of exchange.”

I’m sure we all would like to believe that our government can create prosperity by simply handing out more money. Wouldn’t it be great if, like the businesses “too big to fail”, we could all receive big government bail-outs? But why do they stop at only giving us a few hundred dollars or maybe even a few thousand? If giving big business and bankers billions will save our economy, why not at least give each of us a hundred thousand or so? Then we could really go out and spend our economy back to health. The new administration and congress would be heroes; they would receive our undying devotion, right!
