The steel construction work of the 261 tonnes prototype Wave Dragon is now completed and it will be deployed in the end of February 2003 when instrumentation is completed. During the next 3 years a development consortium will perform long term and real sea tests on hydraulic behaviour, turbine strategy and power production to the grid. The 4. 35 mill. euros project has been secured through substantial grants from the Danish Energy Authority (1. 7 mill. euros), EU (1. 5 mill. euros) and from the Danish system operator Elkraft System’s RTD fund (0. 25 mill. euros). The Wave Dragon is a slack moored device of the overtopping type, consisting of two wave reflectors focusing the waves towards the ramp, where water overtops into a reservoir. The pressure height in the reservoir is converted into power through a number of variable speed axial turbines. During the last three years the Wave Dragon has been subject to a number of test and development activities activities, including the

National Activities September 2006 Contents National Activities_1 National Activities_2 European Ocean Energy Association_3 Agenda Events on Ocean Energy_4 Implementing Agreement Information_4 Editorial Anyone who has spent time in Dublin, Ireland will know that the subject of property investments inevitably crops up at all dinner parties. I heard a new variation on this theme at a recent Dublin dinner party; much to my surprise, I found I was seated next to an investor in a tidal energy company. Either the "Celtic Tiger" has gone mad, or high oil prices, the commercial success o f w i n d e n e r g y , a n d t h e s e a r c h f o r n e w e n e r g y alternatives are driving increased interest in ocean energy projects by private investors. The same drivers are increasing interest in ocean energy exploration in countries not yet involved in the IEAOES. This issue includes articles from two such countries - Mexico and New Zealand. Finally, the European Ocean Energy Association provi

Analysis of Liquid Metal MHD Wave Energy Direct Conversion System Yan Peng, Zuowei Lin, Lingzhi Zhao, Ciwen Sha, Ran Li, Yuyu Xu, Baolin Liu and Jian Li Institute of Electrical Engineering Chinese Academy of Sciences Beijing, China Jason Jia TransUniv Machinery Co. Ltd, Shanxi, China ABSTRACT A new way to generate electric power directly from ocean wave motion is presented in the paper. It makes use of the liquid metal magnetohydrodynamic generator, and provides an excellent match to the mechanical impedance of an ocean wave, which is impossible to supply in other wave power systems. Therefore, the system is highly efficient and can be a very compact device with very high power density, and it is expected to be one of the best ways to convert ocean wave directly into electricity. Performance analysis, such as current and voltage, power output and efficiency, has been carried out when the wave has amplitude of 1 m and period of 6 s. The results show that the electric current and vol

Annex I of the OES-IA work program is the central information collation and dissemination Annex on the technical, economic, environmental and social aspects of ocean energy systems. It also contributes to the definition of future priorities for the Implementing Agreement as a whole. This bulletin highlights the 2010 achievements on ocean energy presented

This article is published with open access at Springerlink. com Abstract This paper provides a status update on the development of the Swedish wave energy research area located close to Lysekil on the Swedish West coast. The Lysekil project is run by the Centre for Renewable Electric Energy Conversion at Uppsala University. The project was started in 2004 and currently has permission to run until the end of 2013. During this time period 10 grid-connected wave energy converters, 30 buoys for studies on environmental impact, and a surveillance tower for monitoring the interaction b

New Publication April 2006 Contents New Publication _1 New Projects_2 National Activities_3 Agenda Events on Ocean Energy_4 Implementing Agreement Information_4 Editorial Welcome to the sixth issue of the IEA OES Newsletter. This issue publication follows the recent launch of a significant IEA report, drafted by the IEAs Renewable Energy Unit, on R&D Priorities for Renewable Energy. The contribution of the IEA-OES to this work, through participation in the March 2005 seminar on R&D priorities, is detailed in this newsletter. Other recent activities in ocean energy in Ireland and in the newest contracting party to the IEA OES, the United States, also feature. It is worth noting that the two articles identify activities relevant to some of the areas in which the IEA OES is currently looking to initiate research. Highlighted in the article on activities in Ireland is the recent launch of a quarter scale test site. The agencies responsible for the site were both active participants
