(from United States of America - copy of american professor s newspaper letter to the public) OUR LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE AUTOMOBILE We ve been depending on the internal combustion engine (ICE) for more than 100 years and over all that time the efficiency of the ICE has climbed to just under 15%. The remaining 85% is waste heat, unfired combustibles. YOUR PERSONAL COST? For every $10 bill you put in your gas tank, $8. 50 is wasted. ` Maple Syrup Industry Feels the Heat of Global Warming ` Vermont Maple Syrup Industry Feels Heat Global warming is beginning to take a toll on Vermont s signature product -- maple syrup -- and the farmers and their families who produce it. Tim Branon, the eldest brother of an extended family that has made syrup for five generations inside the sugar house over a boiling process. But know they are doing in a gleaming stainless steel extractor made in nearby Rutland. It boils the sap, removing moisture and concentrating the maple sugar. He says he can show a production of 14,000 gallons of syrup this year. His brother is incharge of the farm. Tim is very well known of the preparation and he is the only person who opens the tap. "It s totally changed," said Tom. "In the 50s, 60s and even 70s we tapped by hand and used buckets, gathering by hand and using horse-drawn sleighs with wood fired evaporators. I ve written about it once already, but I want to return to The Economist s recent special series about how industrial agriculture is the true and only way to feed the 9 billion people who will inhabit the world by 2050. The framing, I think, is extremely interesting. The widely revered magazine identifies two strains of thought on the food system s future: one serious and one frivolous. The serious one -- made up of "food companies, plant breeders, and international development agencies" -- is "concerned mainly with feeding the world s growing population," which it plans to do "through the spread of modern farming, plant research and food processing in poor countries. S. , very little attention has been paid to the efforts of the hundreds of thousands of volunteers who salvage millions of pounds of fresh food every year by gleaning-the collection of food left behind from a harvest-which provides those in need with free or inexpensive healthy produce they otherwise would have no access to. Parker Farms in Oak Grove, Virginia, has been welcoming gleaning groups since the late 1980s, to gather what is left behind from the harvests. ` Fruit Tree Harvest Contributes to Classroom Snacks Orca s Snack Committee has been hard at work to provide local fresh fruit as part of the Snack Program. The Community Fruit Tree Harvest program (part of the Solid Ground Organization) and Sustainable South Seattle work with neighborhoods to harvest fruit from backyard gardens. Orca s own Michelle Perkin s states that "tons of fruit goes un-picked each year that could benifit countless individuals and organizations. " Both the Community Fruit Tree Harvest program and Sustainable South Seattle coordinate contact, harvest and distribution of pesticide free fruit to local food banks, churches, shelters and Orca s Snack Program. Thus far Michelle and Kate Malkin have averaged 2 deliveries of fruit each week to augment Orca s Snack Program. Special thanks goes out to Michelle, Kate, Tiana Colovos and Gabe from Sustainable South Seattle and Gail from The Community Fruit Tree Harvest for all their efforts to bring fresh fruit to Orca.
