Denise is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Six different student and faculty teams participated: “American Advertising Federation (“AAF”),” “Lambda Pi Eta,” “COMM Club,” “Communication Studies faculty” (the “Fac Attack”), “Dirty S. In the first game, for example, “AAF” beat the “Fac Attack” 12-0. When asked after the game about the “Fac At

As Phil Peckinpaugh (B ’08) explains it, he has “always had a passion for animal welfare. ” This passion has led him down a path filled with many challenges, a lot of personal satisfaction, and a multitude of furry friends. Phil is the Executive Director of ARF, the Animal Rescue Fund of Muncie, Indiana. While Phil jokingly refers to himself as the “Chief Pooper Scooper,” his job is very serious—lives depend upon it. ARF is a no-kill shelter that offers abused, neglected, and otherwise unwanted animals a safe home, medical care and love until new, permanent owners can be found for them. The shelter currently houses 65 dogs, 55 cats, and a pot-bellied pig named Chet. Working at ARF initially was not part of Phil’s lifeplan. Immediately after his graduation from Ball State University, Phil accepted a position as a stock broker. However, he quickly discovered this job did not really suit him. At the same time, ARF was looking for an Assistant Director. Given his love of animals,

Debating on the subject of “legalization of marijuana for recreational use” proved no problem for the Ball State Debate Team as they captured their 4th consecutive title at the 2011 National Educational Debate Association National Tournament. “I feel gratified,” said coach Nicole Johnson about the team’s win. “All that hard work really paid off. ” Johnson explained that students who participate on the debate team do so on top of all other commitments and activities they are involved in. “This is an extracurricular activity for them, they have a full plate of activities all year round, and (the national) tourney is the be-all-endall, especially for the seniors,” Johnson said. Pressure builds for the students not only in the weeks leading up to the tournament, but during the tournament itself. “Students debate for two days without having any clue as to how well they are doing … and they won’t know until semifinals are announced,” she said. According to Johnson, this year’s tourname

Ball State University won the 28th annual Indiana State Individual Events Association tournament, hosted by Ball State University, February 19, 2011. After winning the last five out of six state tournaments, Ball State was favored to win this year’s title. It was last year’s loss, however, and not the favorable odds that motivated the team all year. “It was a goal of the team to regain the state title this year,” said Director of Individual Events, Mary Moore. “We’ve been talking about that since August. ” In fact, Moore even had a “countdownto-state” calendar in her office as a reminder to the team. Last year’s loss was also a motivator for graduate student coach Brandon Bumstead. “It made me really want to help these students reach their goal of winning after seeing their disappointment last year,” he said. He described the purpose of the work that the team put in throughout the year as “dominating at the state tournament. We March 2011 | Volume 1 | Issue 6 DEPARTMENT OF COMM

When Lora Helvie-Mason (MA ’03; Ed. D ‘07) arrived in New Orleans in 2007 to begin teaching at the Southern University of New Orleans (SUNO), the city was still recovering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. Like much of New Orleans, the hurricane had submerged the campus of the historically black college under 4 to 5 feet of water. Gone were most of the markers associated with a traditional campus environment. The landscape was bereft of trees, many of which were killed when salt water flooded the city. Traditional outdoor gathering spaces had been swept clear of their seating. The campus’s buildings were shuttered, waterlogged, mold-infested, and unfit for habitation. But one thing had not changed – the spirit of the students and faculty. This spirit is what drew Lora to accept a position as an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at SUNO. While she had taught in several different educational environments, including Ivy Tech and Ball State

Over a year in the making, the COMM 210 Bucket Speech civic engagement project is finally nearing completion. “I went to a basic course director’s conference last year and someone talked about this project in a smaller class and I wanted to see if we could incorporate it on a much bigger scale—maybe with over 1,000 students,” said Kathy Denker, COMM 210 director and project supervisor. From there, a committee of communication studies graduate assistants adopted the Bucket Speech concept for their civic engagement project. Buckets were made for donations, one used every Monday during the Comm 210 lecture and one that was placed in the communication studies department office. “Students were given a list of local non-profit organizations and were told to research the particular non-profit organization they were interested in, write a persuasive speech about why it should receive the donations, and compete to determine which local non-profit organization will rec

Faculty members Dr. Laura O’Hara and Dr. Carrie Shue collaborated on a research project that was recently published in the National Communication Association (NCA) journal Communication Education. Their work on Diabetes and LowHealth Literacy: A Preliminary Outcome Report of a Mediated Intervention to Enhance Patient-Physician Communication began in 2007 with data gathering. Working with the Muncie Family Practice Residency Program, O’Hara and Shue were able to concentrate on recruiting participants who have diabetes and had used the clinic for treatment. From a pool of approximately 400 patients with diabetes, O’Hara and Shue were able to recruit 100 participants for their study, which focused on an intervention for patients with diabetes and who experience low-health literacy. In collaboration with a group of educators and researchers, a video intervention was developed to help the participants understand their disease and communicate more effectively with their physicians.
