It was first published in 1785 by French physicist Charles Augustin de Coulomb and was essential to the development of the theory of electromagnetism. Coulomb s law has been tested heavily and all observations are consistent with the law. Coulomb s law states that: "The magnitude of the Electrostatics force of interaction between two point charges is directly proportional to the scalar multiplication of the magnitudes of charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distances between them. " There are scalar and vector forms of the equation. The scalar expression assumes that the distance between the charges is large compared to the size of the charge, which means that the two charges in the scalar equation are point charges at any distance.
