The first Selitrichodes were released at four sites in Zululand and it is hoped that more releases will be possible as their populations increase. Releases were done on Mondi’s Shaya Estate, Erlandson Estate, Sappi’s Teza Estate and Zenith Estate at eNseleni. Pilots Patrick Clough and Martin du Plooy will be supported by a fixed wing spotter plane piloted by Simon Gower. The spotter will be used for patrols on high fire danger days as well as helping direct the bombers in the event of a fire. Bonamanzi Game Reserve, in conjunction with KZN Ezemvelo wildlife (EKZNW) is actively doing everything possible to protect its rhino including the dehorning of their rhino. The last two rhino were dehorned during October. None of the horns removed from the rhino are kept on the Bonamanzi property but are stored in a vault. Dehorning process Dehorning is a completely painless procedure, as the horn itself has no pain receptors. The animal is anaesthetised thus ensuring that the animal has no feeling or memory of the

Fuel prices, labour and electricity are the three main increases facing the industry which will lead to increased fertilizer and chemical costs. The Minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant announced that the department has agreed on a minimum wage for farm workers of R105 per day as from 1 March 2013. This represents an increase of 50% compared to last year’s rate. She said, ‘The wage is pegged at R105 per day for employees who work nine hours a day or R11. 66 per hour, R525 weekly or R2274. 82 per month. ’ The new sectoral determination will be promulgated for a three-year period.
